Religious Education (RE)

Intent

Why is Religious Education important?

RE is important because it enables pupils to express their own enquiring, informed and reflective views of values and beliefs.

Implementation

Enquiring:

RE provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. Pupils develop a curiosity about life and are willing to enquire into meaningful questions.

Informed:

RE develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of religion and belief. It encourages pupils to develop respect for and sensitivity to others. Pupils develop skills and attitudes that enable them to be well-informed about religious and non-religious responses to questions.

Reflective:

RE offers opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development. It encourages pupils to think and question. Pupils develop the ability to reflect on and express their own views, whilst also considering the views of others.

Impact

Pupils leave BHA with a love of learning in RE. They appreciate the importance of RE in their understanding of the wider world and current events. They will have a deeper understanding of some of the key religions and beliefs within Britain and the world. Pupils can make links between their learning and events occurring in the media. They have developed resilience and tolerance when approaching difficult topics, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.

When pupils leave BHA in Year 8 they should be able to:

  • Interpret and explain how religion and belief can influence individuals and society and communities.
  • Explain the religions and world views studied with clarity.
  • Interpret the wide range of ways in which religion and belief can be expressed.
  • Consider, explore and evaluate some ‘big questions’ giving reasoned arguments and responses.
