Geography

‘Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future.  What could be more important than that?’

Michael Palin (writer and presenter)

The current Geography curriculum has been influenced by a variety of factors ranging from the characteristics of our local area to national and global issues.  This helps the pupils to develop their understanding and appreciation of the world we live in.

Through our curriculum, pupils:

  • Develop an interest in their surroundings and in the variety of human and physical conditions on the Earth's surface.
  • Have a sense of wonder at the beauty of the world around them.
  • Develop a sense of responsibility for the care of the earth and its people.

We teach and assess our curriculum through our curriculum related expectations:

I can identify the continents, oceans and lines of latitude.

I know and can locate a range of countries in Europe and in other continents.

I can identify over 20 countries around the world and know the continents and oceans.

I know many of the countries in central and western Europe. I know the continents and oceans.

I can identify different types of farming and know where they occur in Great Britain.

I am beginning to explain how processes such plate tectonics work.

I can use a range of map skills to read an OS map.

I can make a range of observations about weather and identify instruments to measure weather.

I can identify a range of physical features caused by glaciation or plate tectonics.

I can describe what places are like using my own observations of photos.

I can interpret choropleth maps and climate graphs.

I can read and understand Yr8 geography information texts.

I can communicate my ideas clearly using my literacy skills.

I can present my work in a neat and well organised way.

I can create some of my own solutions to geographical issues e.g. earthquake resistant building design.

I can interpret data to draw a line and bar chart.

I can explain how physical features are formed e.g. arches and stacks.

I can begin to explain some causes and effects of human activity e.g. soil erosion.

I can identify cause and effects of environmental problems.

I can give reasons for the choices I make.

I can describe how places change due to economic development e.g. China/Kenya.

I can show how people affect the environment using a balanced argument.

I can use and interpret data and explain what it shows. I can create accurate graphs from the data.

I use some relevant maps in my work; I am starting to add more labels to them e.g. China location map.

I can identify problems and benefits of the way people affect the environment.

With guidance I can carry out a geographical enquiry. I use some diagrams, maps or facts that support my opinion or conclusions e.g. Turkish earthquake enquiry.

I can identify where fresh water comes from and the role played by reservoirs in this.
