Wimbledon 2017 Trip
8 bleary eyed pupils met Mrs Speake and Mr Sheridan at 7am on Thursday July 6th to make the journey to Wimbledon.
The traffic was kind (relatively speaking) and we arrived at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at 10.15am. As the gates opened we were first in the queue and the pupils got their first glimpse of Henman Hill / Murray Mound and the big screen on Centre Court.
As we walked to Court 2 we passed Djkcovic having a warm up hit on one of the outside courts. We took our seats on court and were pleasantly surprised to be seated adjacent to the BBC commentary box. Pundits in and out during the day included John Inverdale, Sam Smith, Jonathon Overend, Miles Maglagan and Mark Petchey. At 11.30am play got under way and both Marcos Baghdatis and Grigor Dimitrov were greeted with a huge cheer. It turned into a comfortable win for Dimitrov and the Bredon Hill party left court for a visit to the shop, a glimpse of the players warming up on the practice courts and some strawberries and cream before returning to watch an epic battle between Agnieszka Radwanska and Christina McHale.
The seeded player Radwanska was certainly made to work hard for her win. The next match on court was the most highly anticipated with Milos Raonic (last years defeated finalist) taking on the tricky Mikhail Youzhny. Much to our surprise Raonic lost the first set but fought back to win in four sets.
With heavy hearts we said our goodbyes to Wimbledon before the completion of this match, pausing on the exit bridge to look out across Central London to the Shard. The M25 held us up on the return journey but we pulled into school at just after 9.30pm. A long but fantastic day that I know we all enjoyed.
