International School................... Belarus Visit 2009 |
|
This year was my fourth convoy with the charity Chernobyl 2000. Once again what an amazing experience it was, from the moment the convoy left Bredon Hill Middle School until our return 10 days later. I really enjoyed the opportunity to drive some of the vehicles during the 3,600 mile journey, including the 7.5ton lorry.
On arrival at the school in Dzerzhinsk we were all greeted with such excitement by the headteacher, staff and pupils of the Gymnasium. I was fortunate to have visited the school last year during their Easter holiday but was looking forward to seeing the school in action this time. The next two days were full of interesting lessons and presentations which demonstrated how proud everyone was of the school. We spent a lot of time talking to pupils and staff who were all eager to practice their English and tell us about their school life. In the English lessons, pupils were also keen to find out about school and family life in England. I found the music lesson particularly interesting as the pupils were focusing on creating a healthy lifestyle through the enjoyment of singing, listening to music and playing the musical instruments we had presented to the school last year. Learning some typical Belarusian dances was a challenge and tremendous fun. There was certainly a very relaxed and happy atmosphere throughout the school.Visits to the Arts School, the Music School and the Cultural Centre provided a wonderful insight into how much the children enjoy the chance to be creative and to share their skills.
Galina, the deputy head of the school, was full of energy throughout our stay and had certainly organised a fantastic programme of activities for us to enjoy. It was sad to say good bye, however as last year, we have invited two pupils and a member of staff to visit our own school later this year to experience life in England. Thank you to everyone who made our visit possible. Kate Fardon |
